The world-famous Stanford Medicine integrates a premier medical school with world-class hospitals to advance human health. Last year, Meteor’s Lance series was chosen to retrofit this uniquely challenging project, which was designed and specified by Koltai Lighting Design, and supported by ALR and Pfeiffer Electric. We “virtually” sat down with Rita Koltai, Principal at Koltai Lighting Design, LLC to share with us some of the intricacies of the project.

The Stanford Medical Center at 300 Pasteur Drive is a truly historic building, having been opened in 1959. What type of lighting was used previously in the exteriors and why the need for an upgrade?
The original Stanford Medical Center buildings were designed by Edward Durell Stone. We were able to find copies of the original plans dated 1959. On these plans, the design of the 9’ diameter pendants had a 150W PAR-38 uplight to illuminate the underside of the roof overhang and a 200W incandescent downlight to illuminate the walkways.
Over the years, many retrofits changed the downlight component with a variety of lamp sources including High-Pressure Sodium, Compact Fluorescent, and LED retrofit lamps. The uplight component was somehow lost along the way, and most people were not aware that it ever existed. Of the (53) pendants we retrofitted with the Lance 6 luminaire, only (12) pendants at the front entrance still have plants in the 9’ diameter large dish.
The graceful Stanford Health building is covered in colonnades and geometric panels. What made you choose a direct/indirect luminaire?
The large pendants, hanging approximately 27’ below the roof overhang and 9’-6” above the ground are quite spectacular. Ever since I first saw these pendants, I felt that uplighting to feature the intricate facade and roof overhang as well as downlighting to improve the illuminance on the walkway would look wonderful. I had no idea that this was the original intent of the architect until we began to work on this project.

Mock Up Installation

Final Installation
What are just some of the technical / installation difficulties in retrofitting these 9′ diameter pendants?
The Meteor Lance 6 mock-up luminaire was a wall mount with an integral driver. One of the features of the Lance 6 is that this luminaire is available with different beam spreads for uplight/downlight illumination. We ran calculations to determine the optimal beam distribution for the uplight and wide beam spread for the downlight to balance the lighting effect. Obviously, the wall mount luminaire needed to be modified to a pendant with remote drivers for this application.
The engineers at Meteor were very helpful in modifying the product for us. I must also give credit to the creativity of Kyle Laine at Pfeiffer Electric who figured out how to secure the Meteor pendant in the central opening of the large dish using a ring clamp, L-brackets, and bolts to attach the luminaire to a variety of existing metal parts in the original dish.

The Lance luminaire used came with a RAL 8000 Green Brown custom color. The light is installed so inconspicuously that it seems to be invisible. How important was this to your design?
The custom color to match the existing decorative pendants as closely as possible was extremely important. The upper part of the Meteor pendant is clearly visible during the day, and blending the color with the underside of the pendant was critical in the aesthetics of the installation. I am pleased that Meteor painted the NEMA enclosures to match the luminaires as well.

As we near the holiday season, it’s the perfect time to spread joy and happiness with our loved ones. The best way to do just that is to visit BC Clark Jewelers, a full-service jeweler that currently operates three stores in Oklahoma City. The Classen Curve shopping center location is home to a fabulous Duo 4 installation, designed and specified by HSE Architects whom we “virtually” sat down with to talk more about the project.

An ornate display of draping wire meshes can be seen on the left side of the space. What was the design inspiration behind this wave-like pattern?
Having been inspired by modern jewelry design, we wanted to create a concept that integrated the soft elegance seen in a lot of necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Our design intent was to capture that essence and reinterpret it into architectural features and custom fabrications. The owners asked that the bridal boutique area have an elegant, intimate, and unique atmosphere.
Contending with a 17’ tall ceiling, we concluded that the height needed to be lowered while providing some level of transparency. The finalized design consists of various weaved metal finishes oriented in sequential, concentric waves. The weaved layers create a spatial divider on one side and continue across the ceiling for a dramatic visual effect.
Without the Duo 4, the space above the woven metal would have appeared dull and dark. It dramatically enhanced the color variation between the layers, which ultimately made this design feature’s execution successful.

Getting the appropriate number of foot-candles on the displays was extremely important. However, we also wanted the fixtures to disappear as much as possible and instead highlight the elegant woven mesh. Duo 4’s minimalist design and high lumen output made it the perfect fixture for our design intent.
Yes, the square downlights also felt more appropriate given the rectilinear geometries of the display cases below. We felt like the layout should be a reflection of the display cases themselves.

Rooted in their name and their cultural identity is the idea that the ‘honeycomb’ is nature’s best example of a scalable repeatable investment driven by a common goal. Located in 645 Madison Avenue New York, the company wanted this idea to resonate throughout their new workspace.

Spector Group designed this space to be able to cater to growth while adding the resources needed to achieve a common purpose. International Lights, our leading rep in New York helped specify the Duo 4, a seamless direct/indirect fixture that perfectly blends in with the space.
We “virtually” sat down with the Spector Group team to give us their thoughts on using Meteor’s Duo 4 on this project.

How did the DUO 4 fixture with direct/indirect lighting help add to the “open atmosphere” design of the space?
Playing with Light – The Duo 4, being a direct/indirect fixture, illuminates the underside of the slab, this helped with the perception of higher ceilings.
A customized height of 12” was required for this project. What was the main reason?
The existing ceiling height of the space was only 11’-0” so we wanted to make sure the bottom of the fixture was as high as possible but also to allow enough distance from the top of the fixture to the slab to ensure proper indirect light distribution.
The DUO 4 is a UGR <19 rated fixture. How satisfied were you with the glare and overall fixture on-site?
Glare Free – Glare did not appear to be an issue and lighting levels were adequate.
What controls was the fixture paired with and how satisfied were you with the dimming curve or smoothness of the dimming?
The lighting controls utilized was Wattstopper. The Duo fixtures dimming operations is satisfactory and it works well with the type of controls specified.

Controversies aside, the Marciano Art Foundation was originally dedicated to the presentation and production of contemporary art. The now closed 110,000 square foot building was conceived as an ‘Art Playground’, designed by wHY Architecture. During it’s time, it housed several famous works such as Bolivian American artist Donna Huanca’s “Obsidian Ladder” and Chinese contemporary artist and activist Ai Weiwei’s “Life-Cycle“.
The galleries comprise of two levels and a mezzanine to display the very diverse Marciano art collection. Illuminating a variety of exhibition spaces are our Atria 10 and Signum 16 cylinders.
A majority of lighting fixtures specified, the Atria 10 – comes with our patented Colorflip technology, featuring tunable white from 2700 K – 6500 K. Our tunable white technology is a highly efficient solution because we use flip chip technology which allows higher efficacy. At the specified setting, this Atria 10 fixture can deliver 16,000 lm to 18,100 lm at 220W.

Working with Meteor means you’re going to be working with the High ceiling kings, high performing fixtures in a small form factor. As can be seen in the images, a small number of fixtures can cover a wide range of footcandles.

You know what would make this whole working from home thing easier? If only we can bring the outside, in, and that’s literally what they did at The Spheres. An innovative space where employees can think and work differently surrounded by plants. A Seattle landmark, the Amazon Spheres has installed over a hundred Tetriss fixtures to light up their 40 ft. high living walls with over 30,000 plants.

During the day, the Amazon Spheres has a humidity level of about 60%, but at night, this is cranked up to 100% causing condensation and sometimes even water on our fixtures. It wasn’t just enough to be wet listed, we also applied architectural grade natatorium finishing that is sure to be corrosion free.
In order to put the Living Wall in pure focus, we customized a floodlight bracket to minimize light loss that might seep through from the sides. This also minimizes glare control if you’re looking up from below or walking down the many corridors.
The tetriss can be tilted up to 60 degrees, allowing easy directional control to focus light on where you need it to be. In this project, the custom bracket limited the range of motion of the fixture and we increased the length between the bracket and the fixture to give maximum control.
